Channeling my inner Audrey. Review: Lindy Bop Audrey Dress

Hi everybody!

Annex - Hepburn, Audrey (Breakfast at Tiffany's)_21

Audrey, oh Audrey, your style has inspired so many of us. Thank god for Audrey, and thank god for Lindy Bop for making a dress inspired on her famous one in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. What is so typically Audrey about this is the high neckline. Instead of the wiggle dress with the split she wear in the movie they made a circle skirt on it.

IMG_0157 IMG_0160

I love the dress the most with a full petticoat, but since I was in Spain and it was very warm when I made these pictures, I am not wearing it here. The Audrey Dress comes in a great variety of colours and prints and is such a versatile dress. I love dresses you can wear all year through, combined with a pair of stockings and a cardigan, and with this dress that is so easy! I chose the black Audrey dress because I love simple black dresses that you can combine endlessly with. Adding a panther print cardigan, a bright colored one, different belts, the possibilities are endless. I personally don’t like the belt that comes with the dress, mainly because I generally don’t like fabric belts. So I combine it with my leather belt, my white Hell Bunny elastic belt or with my belt with a huge bow.

I absolutely love the length of the dress, perfect for tall ladies! The full circle skirt has enough place for a huge petticoat and the cotton fabric that the dress is made of is very comfortable. The cotton is of a thin kind, making it very supple, comfortable and flattering.

So if you are looking for a very versatile, comfortable and wearable dress, look into the many prints and colours of the Audrey dress. They are very budget friendly and you won’t regret it!

Vintage advertising.

Hello everybody!

As I have said before, I feel like I was born in the wrong time, but in some perspectives I am very happy to live in the current time. Since the last century we have come a long way, for example in technology, research, emancipation etc. But the old-fashioned role division, misogynism, unknowingness and thoughts and beliefs of those time still become very clear in the advertisements of those days. Ads that would never be approved these days because they are misleading, racist or misogynistic.

I have collected some shocking vintage advertisements for you, that really were printed and used.

Sure, trust a baby with a razor, they are that safe!!

After all, it is perfectly fine to insult and lower women….

Thank god there is a way to be beautiful, because how could you be beautiful if you aren’t full figured… Here’s the solution, just gain weight!

Nothing better to give you children than 7up and Coca Cola!

And of course, smoking! If doctors do it…!

Could you imagine the stir if these ads were displayed these days?

How to start a Pin up wardrobe, the basics!

Hi everybody!

Looking vintage or Pin Up everyday looks like an impossible task, and you must think I have a huge collection of clothing. Well, I do, but you don’t nearly need as much as I have to look like a Pin Up girl everyday. (Pssst… Don’t tell my boyfriend!!) So what are the must-have items for starting a Pin Up wardrobe and style?

I would go for items that you can combine with one another, first some basics.

High waisted jeans or trousers.

1f621d38213182fb86ed11acd22d423aBonnie Cigarette Trousers Plain Black new

These are absolutely ideal. When it is cold outside, or you just don’t feel like wearing a dress or a skirt today, paired with a nice top, blouse or shirt, it will make you look like a Rosie the Riveter! Collectif has some nice ones!

fiona Skirt Plain Red Darla Hilda Skirt Black new

Having a tight fitted beautiful pencil skirt is a Pin Up musthave! Go for a beautiful black one or a red one, those are colors that you can combine a lot! These are as well by Collectif!

Circle skirts

If you are not a big fan of the pencil skirt, go for the Circle skirt. If you feel a bit aware of your curves and want to cover them up a bit, the circle skirt is the way to go. They are beautiful to combine with a petticoat and are easy to combine with some pretty stockings and a nice top.

Pretty tops and shirts.

These don’t have to be expensive at all, like most clothing I wear. Shirts with stripes, polkadots, stars etc. work great! I personally LOVE the Dolores tops by Collectif.

Dolores Top Polka Black New

A pretty dress to your liking.

Go for a pretty dress that you fall in love with and know you will wear a lot, that is suitable for day and night. Like my absolute favorite Heidi Dress by Pinup Girl Clothing or my Hell Bunny Cordelia Dress.

Go for a color of petticoat that matches most of your dresses and skirts. I suggest the black and white petticoat by Hell Bunny that is good quality and not too expensive!

I hope this has given you a bit of inspiration where to start with your style. Oh and while you are here, check out my article about Pin Up Accessories. They can really make your outfit!

Miss Gingers Movie Tips

Hi everybody!

Today I have some beautiful classic movies to share with you. If you love the 1940-1960’s or their style, you need to watch these. Don’t worry, I won’t give away any spoilers!

Pin Up Girl (1944) with Betty Grable and John Harvey

Pin_Up_Girl_poster Pin_Up_Girl6-620x350picture2

This movie makes me go oooh and aaaah all the time, the hair, the clothing, the beauty of the girls, beautiful Betty… If you love the ’40s, watch this, it is on youtube!

Gentlemen prefer blondes (1953) with Jane Russel and Marilyn Monroe

gentlemen-prefer-blondes-marilyn-monroe-02_large_0 Gentlemen_Prefer_Blondes_(1953)_film_poster

Everybody knows the famous scene with Marilyn singing ‘Diamonds are a Girls best friend’ in her beautiful hot pink dress with that bow in the back. This movie is a true jewel, not so must because of the story, but because of how incredibly beautiful Jane Russel and Marilyn Monroe are. It is so wonderful to be able to see them up close.

Casablanca (1942) with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman

Casablanca-poster casablanca_1

Such a beautiful movie, so romantic… A must see! Ingrid’s beauty takes my breath away. And Humphrey certainly isn’t bad to look at either. ‘We’ll always have Paris…’.

Cry-baby (1990) with Johnny Depp and Allison Vernon-Williams

This movie is so funny and well done. This movie really shows you a bit of both styles in the 1950’s, the squares and the drapes. The way Johnny Depp looks with his pomp makes my heart beat faster! And I wish I could look like Wanda (Traci Lords) everyday. She looks like a dream!!

There will be more movie tips coming up! Happy watching!

On a trip with Miss Ginger: Charlie’s 50’s Diner in Alicante

Hi everybody!

As promised here is the review on Charlie’s Diner in Alicante, Spain and of course I made some pictures! the Mr. and I have been searching for 2 weeks to figure out where this diner was, and on the last two days we found out! Charlie’s Diner is located in the centre at Calle San José 8. The diner is small but very beautifully decorated with the typical 50’s diner style and the pin-up plates on the walls!

The Mr. and I enjoyed our food very much here, they played great 50’s music and the service was great. We were served by the sweet Fernanda. She was so friendly and sweet and made us feel very welcome.

The burgers we ate were absolutely great! Nice and juicy! Funny detail is that some of the burgers are named after 50’s celebrities so of course the Mr. went for the Jerry Lee Lewis burger. And guess what? They have Coca-Cola Vanilla and Cherry Coke that I love sooo much!! Can’t get any better!

We felt right at home at Charlie’s diner, blending into the surroundings! Make sure you come and visit them when you are in Alicante!

Lots of love,

xoxo Miss Ginger Tulips

Miss Gingers Reflections: Ignore the critics, only mediocrity is safe from ridicule. Dare to be different!

Ignore the critics, only mediocrity is safe from ridicule. Dare to be different! – Dita von Teese

Hello everybody!

With writing this blog I became very aware of the fact that all my life I have worn exactly what I love, without fearing other peoples judgements or critique, and that this is not something everybody does. From a very young age on, my sweet mother, one of the most beautiful people in the world, always took us with her if we needed new clothes or shoes. Not only because we would have to try it on to see if it fits, but also to give us a certain freedom in our taste and liking. Of course my mother would have the final say and wouldn’t let us go to school everyday in princess dresses or something out of the clothes we had to play dress up with (thank god for that)! My mother was and is a picture perfect example of style and grace. She always did and always will take good care of herself, looking fabulous. Also having two beautiful older sisters, and seeing them grow into women before I did gave me lots of inspiration. When I was still playing with dolls, my oldest sister was already using make-up, and since we always stuck together, she sometimes dolled me up completely, testing her make-up and hairstyling skills. So from a young age I have been developing a certain taste and love for clothing and style and I have my mom and sisters to thank.

Their influence has made me feel strongly about what I love to wear and how I love to look, not giving a hot damn about what other people may think about it. This has not always been easy. Especially in high-school I have suffered a lot from bullying. Being ridiculed, pushed around, spat on and being insulted was part of my daily life. Enough to make you stop wearing what you love, and blend your sparkle into the grey mass of mediocrity. But I refused. I refused to let anyone tell me what to wear or how to look. Why should I? I didn’t harm anyone by looking preppy with red lipstick, wearing fake pearl necklaces and earrings, white blouses with oilily scarves, with pink glasses, heels and a bright pink schoolbag. Ok, some of my outfits and looks weren’t very great, but hey, I didn’t harm anyone! So I stood my ground and silently endured the bullying. And it lasted 5 long years, all the way until I finished high-school. Even though I was a tough cookie, the time in high-school had an effect on me. I became very aware of people looking, turning on my satellite hearing when people passed so I could hear if it was me they were laughing about etc. It had an effect on my self-confidence, but I am very proud of myself for not giving in and blending in with the crowd.

So after high-school, when I started studying at the conservatory, I noticed the people there were of a different kind. They were artists like me, with interest like mine, expressing themselves however they wanted. So I felt the freedom to dress to my liking without anybody bringing me down if I did. So I got the chance to develop my style into what it is now.

Even though the time when I was bullied was very difficult and very unhappy, I can also see the positive side of it. It has made me strong, made me not give a flying damn, taught me to stand firm and fight for what I stand for and left me being quite fabulous if I may say so! ; )

So, the message that I would like to pass on to you all today, is for you to step out of that door in that beautiful dress that you actually have saved for a special occasion. Make your everyday life a special occasion! Dress up, put some great shoes on, put on some beautiful lipstick and conquer the world! It will feel great, I can tell you that! And yes, people might stare, but hey, people will always stare and think something. Might as well give them something nice to look at!

Lots of love,

Review and OOTD: Hell Bunny Francine apple dress in blue in Charlie’s diner!

Hi everybody!

Mr. Tulips and I have visited a ’50s american diner the other day, it was absolutely fabulous! A review with lots of pictures will come in time, I promise! I was wearing my Hell Bunny Francine dress, so what was a better place to make some pictures of my dress?

This dress I bought in a beautiful store in Gent (Belgium) called Sweet P, that also has a webshop. I had seen this dress online, but I wasn’t really enthusiastic seeing the pictures. This is one of those dresses you need to try on before you buy it. The thing that made me doubt about this dress was the shape around the bust, and the fabric. If there is something that I hate it is when fabric gets charged with static electricity and sticks to your legs. This dress is made of a certain fabric that could do that, so normally I wouldn’t even go for this dress, but since I could try it on I did. And I must say that I was quite surprised with the beautiful flow of this dress. It looks nice without a petticoat, but with a petticoat… It is a dream! So when I tried in on with a petticoat in the store, I fell in love.

The beautiful apple and blossom print is super cute and stands out beautifully with the blue of the dress. The shape of the bust, which made me doubt this dress so much is actually quite beautiful. I does accentuate your tata’s, without them looking ginormous. The dress comes without a waist belt, but I like to add it, to get a bit more definition in the waist.

The only thing that I would change about this dress is how delicate it is. It i very easy to damage the fabric, so be careful with jewellery and washing it.

Lots of love,

xoxo Miss Ginger Tulips

A trip with Miss Ginger: Look Pin-Up Hairdresser in Alicante.

Hello everybody!

Before going to Alicante to visit my boyfriend I of course did some research if I could find some vintage/Pin-up hotspots over here. I noticed that the pin-up culture here is very small, but I found a Pin-up hairdresser. So I booked an appointment to have my hair styled by Andres, that is the owner of the salon and is a true lover of vintage and Pin-up.

IMG_0046 IMG_0053

Look Pin-Up is a salon just a little bit out of the city centre of Alicante on Pardo Jimeno 30. Andres is very friendly and will style your hair looking like a modern day pinup. I gave him full freedom to do what he liked with my hair, and he decided to make an updo using my chiffon scarf. He was very clear and I could see very well how he was styling my hair, so I can style my hair like this myself as well.

IMG_0059 IMG_0058

I am very happy with the way my hair turned out, they way he made the updo and how he created curly bangs with some pinned curls!

Getting my hair styled at Look Pin-Up cost me 20 euros, and was definitely worth it! Make sure to visit this salon and ask for Andres when you are in Alicante!
